    “Upgraded Windows and Now My Application Will Not Run!”

    Question:

    I have an old Windows program and after installing XP it no longer runs. I get a message that says it is a 16-bit application and is not supported. How do I get it to run?


    Answer:

    One of the following files are missing or damaged:

      Autoexec.nt
      Command.com
      Config.nt

    To fix the problem:

    1. Get the Windows XP CD and insert it into the CD drive.

    2. Click on the START button.

    3. Click on the RUN command.

    4. In the dialog box, type CMD and hit the ENTER key. You are now in the world of DOS.

    5. TYPE:
      expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt

    6. Hit the ENTER key and it will expand the file.

    7. TYPE:
      expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt

    8. Hit the ENTER key and it will expand the file.

    9. TYPE:
      expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\command.co_ c:\windows\system32\command.com

    10. Hit the ENTER key and it will expand the file.

    11. TYPE: exit

    12. Hit the ENTER key and it will close the DOS window.

    13. Try running the program and see if it works.
