“Upgraded Windows and Now My Application Will Not Run!”
Question:
I have an old Windows program and after installing XP it no longer runs. I get a message that says it is a 16-bit application and is not supported. How do I get it to run?
Answer:
One of the following files are missing or damaged:
Autoexec.nt
Command.com
Config.nt
To fix the problem:
- Get the Windows XP CD and insert it into the CD drive.
- Click on the START button.
- Click on the RUN command.
- In the dialog box, type CMD and hit the ENTER key. You are now in the world of DOS.
- TYPE:
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\config.nt_ c:\windows\system32\config.nt
- Hit the ENTER key and it will expand the file.
- TYPE:
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
- Hit the ENTER key and it will expand the file.
- TYPE:
expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\command.co_ c:\windows\system32\command.com
- Hit the ENTER key and it will expand the file.
- TYPE: exit
- Hit the ENTER key and it will close the DOS window.
- Try running the program and see if it works.
